Mokokchung, April 18 (MExN): The three days National School Safety Programme (NSSP) organized by the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSMDA) ended successfully at Town Hall here today with the SDO (C) Theodore as the chief guest.
The SDO (C) while exhorting the participating teachers observed that it would be good if the teachers could identify some senior students from their schools and let them participate in such trainings in the future. He also encouraged the participating teachers to impart what they have learnt at the training to their students so that the lives of the students can be secured in times of disasters. He further assured that the district administration, which oversees the District Disaster Management Authority, is will to extend all possible help to the schools in disaster management activities.
The District Project Officer, Mokokchung Temsüwangshi Jamir while speaking with media persons after the programme, said that this is the second phase of the National School Safety Programme being initiated by the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority in Mokokchung. The first phase was conducted in April 2, where thirty two Trainers of Teachers (TOTs) were trained on disaster management. In this second phase, the NSDMA trained 101 teachers from 101 schools. In the next few months the NSDMA will be conducting similar programmes in Changtongya and Mangkolemba sub-divisions, said the DPO. Saying this is a pilot project sponsored by the central government; the DPO said that this project is being implemented at Kohima and Mokokchung which will be extended to the other districts slowly. Nonetheless, pointing out the importance of such disaster management programme, Temsuwangshi Jamir said that most of the school buildings are constructed in the sixties and do not conform to the modern safe buildings. Besides, he pointed out that Nagaland lies in an earthquake prone zone and if there is a major earthquake then there will be huge casualties. Therefore, he expressed hope that teachers who were trained at the NSS programme would impart the basic safety skills to the students so that lives can be saved in times of disaster.
“Lives of students depend on teachers during disaster. Therefore, we have to train the teachers on the basic safety skills to the teachers to cope with any catastrophic situation,” said the DPO.
He also expressed deep gratitude to the master trainers and the resource persons from the fire department, the medical department, the civil defence and home guards department in imparting the training to the teachers. He also expressed deep gratitude to the education department for their cooperation during the whole programme.
