Dimapur | August 20 : In another step forward for the ‘Journey of common hope’, top leaders of the three Naga political groups –NSCN/GPRN, NNC/FGN and GPRN/NSCN – have agreed to leave the past behind and work towards a shared Naga future. Through the initiative of the Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR) the top leaders from the three groups met here at Niathu Resort on Saturday.
Top leaders express sincere apology for all their wrongs to the Naga people
In the morning session FNR convenor Rev. Wati had a separate discussion with NSCN/GPRN chairman Isak Chishi Swu and general secretary Th. Muivah, GPRN/NSCN chairman ‘Gen’ (retd) Khole Konyak and general secretary Kitovi Zhimomi and NNC/FGN president ‘Brig’ (retd) S Singnya and vice president Zhopra Vero. In the second session, six members each from the three groups including their top leaders held discussions in the presence of FNR members.
Later addressing mediapersons, FNR members led by convenor Rev. Dr. Wati Aier termed the meeting as “historic” and “intentional” and said that the leaders were eager to talk about the future. “You can see the determination of the top leaders for Nagas to reconcile,” Rev. Wati said and cited the case of FGN president Singnya who reportedly walked two days to reach Noklak in Tuensang district, to attend the meeting.
On the absence of NSCN (Khaplang) group in today’s meet, the FNR said that the forum had also send invitation to the group, and surmised that the group’s president SS Khaplang who is based in Myanmar probably could not attend the meet due to physical distance and other problems.
Meanwhile, a joint statement signed by NSCN/GPRN chairman Isak Chishi Swu, GPRN/NSCN chairman ‘Gen’ (Retd) Khole Konyak and NNC/FGN president ‘Brig’ (Retd) S Singnya, stated that notwithstanding the commitment and support of the Naga groups for genuine reconciliation, the path to Naga reconciliation remained arduous due to decades of  internal conflicts.
“Nevertheless, our commitment to Naga reconciliation brought us together…in the spirit of openness towards one another and the indispensable necessity of reconciliation for the historical and political cause of the Nagas,” the statement said.
The top leaders in the joint statement said that they wish to inform the Naga people that the political groups have honestly shared their personal opinions on the “tragic divisions of the past.” “We acknowledge that during this time of separation we have profoundly hurt one another; and today through this God-given opportunity we have expressed how deeply sorry we are and we have genuinely forgiven each other,” the statement read.
It also said that for healing to take place, the Naga political leaders would like to collectively express sincere apology to the Naga people for the wrongs the Naga groups committed in the course of the Naga struggle.
“Henceforth, we declare to the Naga people that we have reconciled before God and fellow human beings and in this spirit of reconciliation we are persuaded to understand each other and work towards a shared Naga future on the foundation of our historical and political rights,” the statement added. The leaders further appealed to Nagas that in the “spirit of love let the past remain the past, and from today, let us toil for our common cause.”
