Kohima, May 29 (MExN): The Directorate of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection (LM&CP), Government of Nagaland, in collaboration with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Department of Legal Metrology, Government of India, on Friday conducted a one-day training programme for all Nagaland Legal Metrology Officers at Hotel Japfu, Kohima.
The programme was held under the theme “Strengthening of legal metrology with new technical developments.” As per the DIPR report, addressing the gathering as special guest, Wonchio Odyuo, NCS, Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection, stressed the urgent need for the department to transition from traditional systems to modern digital technologies in the field of legal metrology.
“The world is now moving rapidly towards digitalisation and departments must adapt to the changing technological landscape,” Odyuo said.
The Secretary acknowledged that the department plays a very important role in consumer protection despite facing a shortage of manpower and the challenge of keeping pace with rapidly evolving technologies.
Highlighting the sweep of ongoing digital transformation, Odyuo pointed out that many systems, including smart monitoring devices, digital weighing scales and billing systems, are now increasingly digitised, bringing greater accuracy, efficiency and transparency in operations. He added that digital systems help minimise human error and improve monitoring and verification processes both at the district and headquarters levels.
The Secretary further noted that the emergence of Artificial Intelligence and e-commerce has transformed trade and transactions, making them faster and more efficient. He underscored that legal metrology measures are becoming increasingly important in digital trade to ensure consumers receive correct quantity, pricing and proper product declarations during online transactions.
Urging officers to continuously upgrade their knowledge and skills, Odyuo said keeping pace with technological advancements is essential for effective implementation of legal metrology standards and consumer protection mechanisms in the State.
The programme featured Dr Rakesh Joshi, Deputy Director, Legal Metrology and Head of RRSL Guwahati, Government of India, as the resource person. Dr Joshi delivered the keynote address and led the technical session on new technical developments and the strengthening of legal metrology practices.
The technical session was moderated by Ngangshimakok, Assistant Controller, LM&CP Dimapur. Officers actively participated in discussions and feedback sessions focusing on improving enforcement mechanisms, technical efficiency and consumer protection measures in the State.
The inaugural session was chaired by Shiekhozo, Assistant Controller HQ, LM&CP. Limatoshi Jamir, Additional Controller and Head of Department, LM&CP Nagaland, delivered the welcome address.
The programme concluded with closing remarks by Chullen Chang, Assistant Controller, LM&CP Tuensang, followed by a vote of thanks delivered by Shiloh Kath, Deputy Controller, LM&CP.
