Accused arrested within 6 hours, admits to crime

Dimapur | October 23

The Dimapur police informed that the accused in the murder of a 17 year-old girl at Kacharigaon, Dimapur has admitted to committing the crime. The Commissioner of Police (CP) told the media today that the accused, identified as one Yilobemo Mozhui (19 years), was arrested within 6 hours of the discovery of the deceased victim’s body on October 22.

He was described as a theology student and arrested from his residence.

Motive was still to be established but, as per preliminary findings, the accused reportedly befriended the victim through social media. While disclosing that the accused admitted to committing the crime on the evening of October 21, the CP said that the accused contacted the victim through phone to go out for an “evening walk” during which the murder was suspected to have occurred. The victim’s body was found the next morning.

The police, initially, did not rule out rape, which was still to be established pending post-mortem report.

Another suspected murder of minor, parents arrested

In another suspected murder, a couple was arrested on October 22 in connection to the death of a 14 year-old girl. According to the CP, the couple had lodged an FIR at Chümoukedima Police Station informing that their daughter (14 years) was found dead in their home in Shoxuvi on October 22 in a suspected suicide.

However, the CP said that their complaint was inconsistent with the findings of the preliminary police inquiry at the scene of the death. The inconsistencies rose suspicion on the parents, who were interrogated.

“The complainants became the accused,” the CP said, while adding that the couple was in custody and further investigation on.

The CP further called for sensitivity in reporting crimes/offences relating to women and children. The law forbids the public disclosure of the identity of women and children falling victim to crime, especially sexual in nature and murder, and also of women and children in conflict with the law. As opposed to this, the identity, including pictures, of the victims often circulate on social media with the recent incident being an instance.

The CP said that not only is it insensitive but also a punishable offence, and appealed the people and public bodies refrain from doing so.
