Nagaland’s first AFC A-License Coach William Koso dies in road accident

William Koso, a prominent football coach and coach educator from Nagaland, passed away on March 25 following a tragic accident at Chümoukedima.

According to sources, Koso met with an accident in the early hours of March 25, after which he was rushed to Referral Hospital, where he was declared dead by the doctors.  A post-mortem examination is reportedly scheduled to take place at the Dimapur District Hospital.

Koso is known as the first coach from Nagaland to earn the prestigious Asian Football Confederation (AFC) A license. He was also the first AIFF ‘D’ license instructor from the state. 

His coaching credentials include a stint at Royal Wahingdoh FC, and also as a former assistant coach at Aizawl FC. In Nagaland, he was the head coach for Kohima Komets FC and he also coached Life Sports Football club during the Naga Premier League (NPL).

Koso was also the first Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Futsal level 1 coach for Nagaland. He had also served as Technical Director of the Nagaland Football Coaches Association.

At the time of his demise, he was serving as the High Performance Manager (HPM) at the Khelo India State Centre of Excellence (KISCE) Nagaland. He was also the Technical Convenor of the Nagaland Super League (NSL).

NSL Playoff Match 2 postponed

Following the news of William Koso’s demise, the NSL Governing Body announced its decision to postpone the Playoff Match 2 as a mark of respect and remembrance.

The match between Barak FC and Nagaland United, originally scheduled for March 25 at 4:30 pm, will now be played on March 26, 2025 (Wednesday) at 4:30 PM, at the same venue. 

“We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family and loved ones of Late Mr. William Koso. His contribution, dedication, and presence will be deeply missed by the entire football fraternity of Nagaland. May his soul rest in peace,” the NSL Governing Body wrote on Tuesday.
