PHC Satoi issue resolved ‘amicably’

Zunheboto, February 24 (MExN): Following the ultimatum issued by the Ikiye-Itovi Youth Front (IIYF) on February 21, the Zunheboto district Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Akaho Sema visited the Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Satoi on February 22.

The CMO’s visit came after the IIYF highlighted the absence of medical staff at PHC Satoi under Satakha sub-division in Zunheboto district during an emergency situation involving injured persons in an accident case.

The Youth Front had served a 24-hour ultimatum to the State Health and Family Welfare department and the CMO to initiate stern action against the erring healthcare workers, allot medical requirements in the PHC and to conduct a physical visit.

As per the IIYF’s statement on February 24, soon after the incident, the CMO made a correspondence with them and immediately directed the assigned medical health care workers to reach the PHC on February 21.

The CMO along with 4 others inspected PHC Satoi on February 22 to check the status, and initiated necessary measures. A meeting was also reportedly held with officials from Satoi Town Youth Organisation (STYO) and Satoi Range Students Union (SRSU).  The CMO also held a separate meeting with the PHC staff.

The ‘miscommunication and misunderstanding’ between IIYF and the Health department has been resolved amicably after the meeting, the IIYF stated on Wednesday.

Action taken
Speaking to The Morung Express, the CMO regretted the ‘unfortunate’ event and stated that the medical officers in question are ‘dedicated’ but were found to be out of station without official leave on the fateful day.

Show cause notice is to be served to every staff found absent and more essential medicine/ dressing materials are in place, it was informed.

Further, the CMO mentioned that the PHC building is under active major repair and renovation under the Nagaland Health Project.

On the appeal of the IIYF to provide an ambulance for the PHC, the CMO stated that provision for a dedicated referral transport service has been proposed, while acknowledging the ‘extremely poor connectivity’ to Satoi area.

The CMO further stressed the need for community involvement and participation. In this regard, the IIYF assured full cooperation and participation with the department in the best interest of the area.

It also acknowledged the State Health department for the quick intervention and redressal of their grievances.
