Dimapur, August 10 (MExN): Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Union of Dimapur (ENPUD) today carried out a massive rally on Wednesday, August 10, demanding that the authorities speedy up efforts to nab the gunman responsible for the killing of one Seopi Sangtam alias Chemtingse Sangtam, a young man in his thirties, recently in Dimapur.
According to reports, the deceased was shot by an unidentified gunman on August 6 last at Super Market, Dimapur, the motive behind which is still unknown. The silent procession, consisting men, women and the young alike, numbered in the thousands. It started from Super Market and ended at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office where a memorandum was submitted to the district administration.
ENPUD urge authorities to nab gunman
Jointly appended by the presidents of the six tribal units of the ENPUD, the memorandum demanded  setting up of a ‘Special Investigation Team’ to probe the case, immediately. Demanding that the culprit be brought to book and befitting punishment awarded as per the law of the land, it cautioned: “In the event of failing to meet with the above demands, the people of eastern Nagaland will be compelled to take further course of action.”
It maintained that the deceased was a young man of good moral character without any criminal inclination whatsoever and had “no involvement in any anti-social activities nor any factions”. An educated unemployed youth, late Sangtam was in Dimapur to apply for a job in the office of the General Manager, Nagaland State Transport, the memorandum stated. Deputy Commissioner N. Husheli Sema, IAS, responded  to the demand  by assuring  to do everything within  means  to nab the shooter.
Barring a minor hiccup, the procession passed off without any major incidents. Just as the procession was passing through the DC Court junction, some of the emotionally charged demonstrators took offence at two motorcycle-borne individuals who were said to be going towards the DC’s office. The riders, it was learned did not heed the advice of the traffic police stationed there, not to pass through until the procession has gone past.
Unheeded, they tried to maneuver the two-wheeler through the demonstrators who were marching in dual file. The demonstrators stopped the motorcycle and nearly manhandled the riders.
Fortunately, the duo managed to free themselves from the clutches of the peeved demonstrators and fled the scene leaving behind the motorcycle. A brief hullaballoo ensued. The police as well as some of the elders in the procession intervened and pacified the crowd. The police took custody of the motorcycle. Later, some of the police personnel told that one of the two riders was taken away by the police to avoid an unwanted confrontation.

Police set up SIT

Responding to the demand of the ENPUD, the district administration has set up a Special Investigation Team to trace the shooter. Speaking to The Morung Express later in the evening, Superintendent of Police Z Mero disclosed that the team is headed by the Additional Superintendent of Police of Dimapur. Queried whether the police have any lead in the case, the SP replied in the negative. Nonetheless he assured the police’s best efforts. “We (police) still have no clue”, the SP said as to the person or persons responsible for the murder. Further, motive, if any, behind the killing is vague; while no witnesses have come forward to provide any clue.
According to unconfirmed reports, late Seopi Sangtam alias Chemtingse Sangtam was shot from behind.
