Dimapur, August 30 (MExN): The Indigenous Women Forum of North East India (IWFNEI) today rallied a call to all indigenous peoples and communities of the North East region to fight to secure the rights of people affected by corporate wrongs such as the oil spill in Champang village in Wokha district.
“The oil spill hazard of Champang oil field has been lying unattended and ignored for almost two decades by the various concerned responsible government agencies and companies leaving the affected people and their surrounding environment in despair with no sight of respite till some recent news reports and the latest filing of a PIL which has been long overdue,” the organization state din a press release today.
The organization quoted health experts to have highlighted the adverse impact of toxic waste produced from oil spill ‘as hazardous to the health of human kinds, notwithstanding all living things including floras and faunas’.
“The impact on Climate Change by the burning of fossil fuels has been the bane of the modern society and every citizen, not only environmentalists, should understand the gravity of such impacts,” the organization stated.
The IWFNEI expressed serious concern over the oil spill and extended solidarity with the affected people of the area, particularly, the villagers of Tssori and Champang under Wokha district in the state of Nagaland. These villages have not only suffered health hazards but also can now no longer cultivate in their areas, which have been affected by the oil spill.
The IWFNEI appealed to all indigenous peoples and communities of the North East region to extend ‘support to the democratic and legal process of securing the rights of the oil spill affected communities.’ The press release was appended by the organization’s convener Khesheli Chishi and co-convenor Seema Ranghongpi.
