Rise in hotels and restaurants in Nagaland: Survey

In the recent years, there has been a rise in the growth of hotels and restaurants in Nagaland.

This was largely due to the growth in travel and tourism industry especially with the promotion of Hornbill festival by the State government, according to the survey on Hotels and Restaurants conducted by the Economics and Statistics department, Nagaland. 

The report stated that this sector is reported to have contributed 6.8% to the Gross Domestic Product during 2019.

The survey conducted from January 2020 to March 2020 covered 11 districts of Nagaland. This project is funded under ‘Support for Statistical Strengthening’ scheme under Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India.

“Hotel & Restaurants survey is to develop methodologies for improving State Domestic Product (SDP) and District Domestic Product (DDP) for estimating the contribution of hotel and restaurant sector to the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) and for estimating the DDP of the state, as the data captured is disaggregated at sub-State level with an aim to capture their activities, characteristics, employment, income and expenditure,” stated the department in its Annual Administrative Report 2020-21 tabled in the recently concluded State assembly session.
 
Highest number of hotels in Dimapur
The survey covered 120 hotels across the State of which maximum number of hotels i.e 58 are located in Dimapur district followed by Kohima with 22 hotels.

85% of hotels are functioning under private proprietorship and 15% are under joint partnership. 4.25% of hotels owners are Scheduled Tribe followed by Scheduled Caste and General at 5.51%.

61.42% of hotels provide food services of which 15.38% are vegetarian and 75.64 offer both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food.

83% of hotels provide room services, 25% of hotels have internet service, 70.87 % has telephone facilities, 42.52% has laundry service, 25.98% of the hotels have banquets, conference hall and 25.98% have online reservation facility.

The report stated that there are 1,831 rooms available in the State out of which 34.63% of hotels offer AC rooms and 62.59% offer non AC rooms.

The report stated that the work force in hotels is 1,022 out of which 658 numbers of employees are male and 360 females.

There are 324 migrant workers engaged in this sector which is 31.70 % of the total work force.

The total expenditure incurred by hotels during 2017-18 and 2018-19 are Rs 16,48,82,360 and Rs 18,17,86,939 respectively. Incomes generated by hotels during the same period are Rs 24,85,17,960 and Rs 27,93,76,689 respectively.

 Restaurants
Out of the 514 restaurants surveyed across the State, 162 were located in Dimapur district and 112 in Kohima. The report stated that 77% proprietors are from within the State and 23% of the proprietors are from other states. 71.01% of restaurants provide vegetarian and non vegetarian services.

The total workforce of restaurants in the state is 1,361 of which 746 are male and 614 female.

There are 420 migrant workers engaged in the restaurants which is 30.86% of the total workforce.

The report stated that the total expenditure incurred on restaurants in the State was Rs 30,39,92,658 and Rs 38,71,29,880 during 2017-18 and 2018-19 respectively. The total income generated was Rs 57,96,54,341 and Rs 76,26,84,292 during 2017-18 and 2018-19 respectively.

 Tea and snacks stalls
The survey was conducted across 273 tea stalls in the State, out of which maximum number of stalls constituting 70 were in Kohima district followed by Mon district with 38.

71.43% of stall owners are Scheduled Tribe followed by Scheduled Caste at 12.09% and General at 8.42%.
The report stated that females own almost half of tea and snacks stalls in Nagaland.

There are 94 migrant works engaged in this sector which constitute 31.64% of the total workers.

The total expenditure incurred by tea and snacks stalls in the State was Rs 7,32,74,344 and Rs 9,89,37,785 during 2017-18 and 2018-19 respectively.

Income generated by this sector stood at Rs 10,03,30,330 and Rs 13,64,35,490 respectively during the same period, the report stated.
