The foundation day of Friends of 80 plus Kohima village, which falls on April 30, could not be organized this year too due to COVID-19 situation. However, a special gift was presented to 80 plus citizens numbering 183 sponsored by Mr & Mrs KC Angami.

The yearly magazine 2020-21 was sponsored by the children of Lt Vinyüzo Mepfhuo.

It may be recalled that the Friends of 80 Plus was formed on April 30 in 2002 by a few like- minded people of Kohima village. “The idea behind creating this platform is to celebrate the presence of elders in our lives and for young people to reach out to them through this platform,” stated Neidonuo Angami, convenor, Friends of 80Plus.

Since its inception, the Friends of 80 plus have been commemorating the 30th April as its foundation day to honour the 80 plus citizens, stated Neidonuo in an annual magazine.

She stated that unlike many parts of the world, “We have a tradition of taking care of our elders in our society. Most of our elders continue to live in their own homes under the care of their families, relatives and neighbours. While some live alone, many move into their children’s homes for their well being and care.”

I am proud to say that our elders have no room to feel social isolation and loneliness because of our rich tradition, she stated adding that a lot of young people understand the importance of elderly care in the Naga society.

Meanwhile, she thanked everyone for supporting and guiding the Friends of 80 Plus in many ways.

In the last 16 years, we have gained and learnt so much and we are grateful to all sections of our village and society for being extremely generous and encouraging, she added.
