The situation in Ungma village, under the 26 Aonglenden seat, was reported to be under control following a violent incident, which happened after polling on February 27. The Deputy Commissioner, Mokokchung, Shashank Pratap Singh described the incident as a “minor scuffle” between rival supporters of the two candidates from the Aonglenden constituency.

According to the DC, the incident happened in Ungma’s upper khel, at around 8:30-9:00 pm, “where supporters gathered in one place and started stone-pelting.” He said that the situation was brought under control by the police, who were immediately dispatched to the scene, led by the Returning Officer of the Aonglenden constituency. An unspecified number of people were detained by the police, who were later released after signing ‘Good behaviour bonds.’

On the report that one house was targeted and vandalised by supporters of one candidate, the DC maintained that it was pelted with stones.

Houses and vehicles in the vicinity of the incident incurred damage but the extent of damage was not specified. As of 8:00 pm, Tuesday, the situation was said to be “quite peaceful” with the DC stating that two additional companies of the NAP (IR) have been deployed in the village. According to him, no formal complaint was received and there was no report, officially, of injury.

Meanwhile, other sources citing official accounts said that during the incident one house was ransacked by election goons.  The sources said that a few people sustained injury during the violence. The house allegedly belonged to a relative of one of two candidates from the constituency. It was added that a case was registered at the Police Station-II.
