101 volunteer teachers to impart basic literacy in Tsg

A district level orientation training programme on Padhna Likhna Abhiyan (Adult Education Scheme) under Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Human Resource and Development, Government of India was held on April 15 at Town Hall, Tuensang.

In the keynote address, Rokozeho Sothu, Nodal Officer, State Literacy Mission Authority (SLMA), Adult Education, Nagaland shared the concept and objective of the mission. He said, “The principal target of the programme is to impart functional literacy to 57 lakh adult illiterates in the age group of 15 years and above across the country. In Nagaland, the Government of India has approved Kiphire, Tuensang and Mokokchung districts where 44000 illiterates have to be imparted basic literacy.

In Tuensang we have 23558 illiterates and with the support from the Government of Nagaland, SLMA and district education officials we have identified 101 volunteer teachers to impart basic literacy in 101 learning centres, he informed.

“We should consider ourselves as missionaries and our mission is to educate the illiterate citizens so that they will be able to live their lives with honour along with the rest of the literate people and find a place in the society without any discrimination in this fast changing world,” Sothu added.

Ajit Kumar Verma, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Tuensang who was the special guest of the programme stated that, “Teaching is considered as the highest and most important profession and teachers are respected by all,” and urged the teachers to respect their profession.

Highlighting the importance of education, Verma stated, “Teachers should know their responsibility and must do their best to guide the dropouts through this programme and educate our people living in the remotest part of our places.”

Around 90 volunteer teachers participating in the programme were trained by the resource person Livika, on topics such as ‘Who we are as teachers’, ‘Our responsibilities towards community’, ‘Goal-setting and visioning towards empowering the illiterate through Padhna Likhna Abhiyan’ etc.

The programme was chaired by Nokren, Supervisor Adult Education, DEO Tuensang and the invocation was spoken by Imsujungba, Pastor Sangtam Baptist Lithro Tuensang Town.

Welcome address was delivered by Temjenkala Sangtam Assistant District Education, Tuensang and vote of thanks was delivered by S Mongtsoa, Supervisor Adult Education DEO, Tuensang.
