Chotisuh Sazo was unanimously elected today as Speaker of the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) during the first day of the first session of the 12th NLA.
Sazo was elected from 18th Chozuba Assembly Constituency under Phek district. His name for the post of Speaker was proposed by Longrineken and seconded by N. Thongwang. Leader of the House and Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Tokheho Yepthomi led the newly elected to the dais and then congratulated the latter during the assembly session today.
After his election, Sazo told the floor of the House that he was delighted by the expressions made about him by the Leader of the House and the Leader of the CLP. Sazo assured the House that it would be his honest endeavor to see that rights, privileges and dignity of all members are protected under his presiding authority.
He also assured that he will make efforts to be fair, impartial and judicious to the members irrespective of party affiliation.
“Party affiliations cannot diminish the responsibility and confidence the people have reposed upon each of us to act in shaping their destiny. It is my aspiration that deliberations by Members of this House will always uphold the greater interest of the people and shall set a new blueprint before the country,” Sazo said.
Stating that he was conscious of the onerous responsibility of the office he has been called upon to shoulder, he said “While precedents, conventions and rulings set by my illustrious predecessors will be my steady guide, I will earnestly look forward to your cooperation and indulgence in discharging my duties.”
Sazo said that his efforts in doing so will be to ensure impartiality towards the members in this House as he was expected to.
“I shall also strive to sustain the high tradition of decorum, decency and dignity that Nagaland Legislative Assembly has set as its rich heritage. The imperative need for maintaining discipline and decorum on the floor of the House can hardly be overemphasized,” Sazo said.
He said that it is pre-requisite for our parliamentary institution and the members of this House to uphold the utmost respect and strictly adhere to the norms in the House and meticulously follow the parliamentary etiquette.
He said the time at the disposal of the House is limited and precious. “If Parliamentary democracy has to boom and strike deep roots, it is a key aspect that democratic organs have to be strengthened and its treasured values upheld by all the members,” he added.
Meanwhile, Sazo congratulated all the members for getting elected to the 12th NLA and further thanked all for having elected him to the office of Speaker.
