KVK Peren implements NEH prog; distributes inputs to farmers

Peren, March 24 (MExN): KVK Peren, ICAR-RC for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, Jalukie organized input distribution cum farmer scientist interaction programme under IVRI-NEH programme in collaboration and sponsored by Eastern Regional Station (ERS) of ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Kolkata at Women Society Hall, Jalukie on March 19.

Dr L Babita Devi, CTO (Animal Science) KVK-Peren delivered the welcome address. She appreciated the efforts of ICAR-IVRI, ERS, Kolkata for implementing NEH programme and distributing inputs through KVK-Peren. Dr D J Rajkhowa, Joint Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, Medziphema graced the function as Chief Guest and lauded the efforts of ERS, ICAR-IVRI, Kolkata for organising livestock-based activities even during this crisis period for benefit of the farmers of the area and assured to extend all possible help for executing future programmes. 

Dr P S Banerjee, Station In-charge, ERS, ICAR-IVRI, Kolkata briefed the gathering about ICAR-IVRI, the premier research institute in animal sciences, highlighting the research achievements, particularly in developing vaccines and diagnostic kits for prevention and control of animal diseases. During his speech, Dr Banerjee also pronounced the objectives of the programme and role played by ICAR-IVRI, Kolkata in improving the socio-economic conditions of the beneficiaries through implementing various schemes and flagship programmes such as Tribal sub-plan (TSP), Scheduled Caste-sub-plan (SCSP) and North-Eastern Hill (NEH) in the Eastern and North Eastern Regions of India. 

The inaugural programme was followed by Kisan Gosthi-cum-Awareness Programme through organisation of a Farmer Scientist Interaction. 

During the technical session, Dr Subhasish Bandyopadhyay, Principal Scientist gave an overview of the importance of pig rearing in rural economy of India as a whole and north eastern region, in particular. He also appraised the beneficiaries on healthcare and measures to be taken to control parasitic infections of piglets in different seasons and urged to adopt scientific management practices for better production and increased productivity of animals. 

During the programme, Dr Bimalendu Mondal, Principal Scientist, ICAR-IVRI, ERS, Kolkata spoke on vaccination and emphasized the importance of timely vaccination of pigs, particularly against classical swine fever (CSF) and porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome (PRRS) which is required to control the most devastating epizootic diseases, which cause high morbidity and mortality in them. 

During the interactive session, the problems and issues raised by the beneficiaries pertaining to health, marketing and management aspects of livestock including pigs were also duly addressed by the scientists of ERS, Kolkata and Dr L Babita Devi, CTO (Animal Science), KVK-Peren, Nagaland. 

The Farmer Scientist Interaction was followed by distribution of 40 piglets, along with 3600 kg pig feed and mineral mixture supplements among 20 beneficiaries, mostly from weaker society of different villages of Peren district of Nagaland. The beneficiaries were also handed over a kit comprising of hand sanitizer, gloves and masks and urged to maintain social distancing and wear mask at public places. 

The programme concluded with vote of thanks pronounced by Dr Patu K Zeliang, ACTO (PBG), KVK-Peren.
