Wokha orgs issue ultimatum for road works to commence

WOKHA, SEPTEMBER 30 (MExN): The Wokha Village Youth Organization, Wokha Village Students’ Union and Wokha Village Eloe Ekhung have issued a one month ultimatum for commencement of construction and widening works in a stretch on National Highway (NH-61/NH-2) from Miropen Gate to Hammock Resort under Wokha district.

The stretch in concern involves widening of the single intermediate lane to two lane from 72.40 km to 83.00 km on the said highway.  A joint statement from the three organizations said that the public of Wokha town have been experiencing immense hardships over the years since the highway which passes through the heart of Wokha town is in a deplorable condition.

“Due to the pathetic road condition, vehicular movement in the town has been disturbed on a daily basis posing serious threats to vehicles and commuter alike. The worsening condition of the main road is such that travelers from other districts are seen taking alternative road via Wokha Village. School buses, office goers, commercial vehicles of the town are compelled to take long winding circular road in the town which is disturbing,” the organizations stated.

They informed that widening of existing highway to two lanes commenced three years back but has become a “distant dream for the people of Wokha town.” The organizations said that “as per reliable source,” formalities for commencement of excavation work are still under process and is the “main reason for delay and inaction.”

They added that under the given circumstances, the concerned department seems not to be in a position to commence/implement the work during 2021.

The organizations therefore issued an ultimatum to the PWD (NH), Government of Nagaland to complete all necessary formalities at the earliest and commence the work within one month with effect from September 29.

Failure to do this, the organizations cautioned that they would take their own course of action.
