Dimapur | June 8

There is a new entrant to the political and electoral space in Nagaland with the registration of a new party with the Electoral Commission of India.

The Rising People’s Party (RPP) based in Dimapur was officially registered by the ECI as a new political Party on June 6.

Confirming the same to The Morung Express on Tuesday evening, Joel Naga, who was designated as the Party President in the application to ECI, said that RPP was registered on June 6 and it was confirmed via email/ECI website on June 7.

We are yet to get an official order from the ECI but the registration status has been confirmed, he said.

Among others, Joel is associated with the mass-based anti-corruption watchdog, Action Committee Against Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) as a founding member and recently with The Naga Rising, a self-described ‘ideological body’ of emerging voices.

Asked about the future course of action, Joel said that the Party would strive for creation of a new Nagaland.

“In short the RPP desires to bring ‘real change’ and will strive for the creation of a ‘new Nagaland,’ he said.

“The party is nothing without the participation and support of the people, especially the youth and women, and therefore it will endeavor to give leadership to this disempowered section of people,” he added.

Joel further informed that there would be an official launching programme of the party after the lockdown. If it (the lockdown) persists for long, it would be held virtually, he added.

The party’s ideology and vision would be given out in detail during the same. The party plans to hold press conference as and when the COVID-19 situation improves.

While the immediate aim is to set-up the party, the RPP is aiming at 2023 State Assembly election to formally enter the electoral fray. It is expected that women would get ample representation in the party’s set-up and electoral battle.

Regarding party functionaries as well as membership drive, Joel said that the names would be given out during the official launch of the party while the membership drive will begin thereafter.

It must be noted here that a public notice regarding the RPP’s application for registration with the ECI was published on January 5, 2021.

In its submission to the ECI for registration, apart from Joel, the office bearers of the Party were given as Lungly Chingkhu as General Secretary, Lhikhro Kreo - Secretary, and Vitho Zao – Treasurer.  A 30-day period from the date of publication of the notice was given for any objection to the registration.

Thereafter, information on ECI’s website showed that RPP submitted the application for registration along with 10 other parties on February 4 this year.
